Finding A Hungry Niche You Can Market To

by sheila on March 1, 2009

Pile of PancakesFinding a niche you can make money in, is the most important step you will take.

Niche: noun – Your niche is your job or activity which is exactly suitable for you. – Collins Cobuild Dictionary.

Niche in Business: noun- An activity or subject that is suitable for a specific group of people.

Let me tell you a story.

Keith’s Lunch in Provo Utah was the hot spot to eat diner food. He opened his doors at 5:30 and closed “when he felt like it.” At lunch time customers would line up out side of the restaurant waiting to get in. Why? Keith filled a niche. He catered to the blue collar worker that wanted to eat a blue plate special, and be a part of a group. Besides it was entertaining. Niche: noun- An activity or subject that is suitable for a specific group of people.

I was a waitress for Keith. I was part of the entertainment. I was part of the yelling, the joking, the fun, and the family.

When you entered the world of Keith’s Lunch you entered a realm like no other. When I took a your order I had to remember exactly what you ordered and yell the order to the kitchen. (Now that is quite a trick when you have a table of 10). The cooks would prepare the food, and I would deliver it, all from memory. When you finished you would remember what you ate and Keith would add up what you owed in his head. You paid.

Now there was no disputing what you owed…I saw Keith chase a few questioning customers around with a BIG butcher knife he kept under the counter. You knew you were in trouble when he brought that knife out and slammed it down on the counter.

You wouldn’t dare think about giving me a problem, all I had to do was tell Keith and he would take care of you! You would either be so embarrassed you never came back or you took Keith’s abuse in the tone of fun it really was. You always remembered your Keith’s Lunch experience.

Imagine going into a restaurant where the waitress knows you by name, knows exactly how you like your coffee and what you usually have for lunch. Imagine a restaurant that made you feel like part of the group. Imagine a place where your Chicken Fried Steak fills the plate and is served hot and fast. Keith filled that niche. Niche: An activity or subject that is suitable for a specific group of people.

A few months ago, just off of the freeway exit in Orem, Utah, a new restaurant opened it’s doors to a waiting clientele. The restaurant caters to the Harley Davidson crowd and is part of a Huge Harley store. It fills a niche, the curiosity of the rest of the world and my stomach. YUM

I am not going to re-invent the wheel on why you should find a niche. I am going to guide you to the experts: Seth Godin Video, Jonathan Thomas, Brian Carke, Daniel Socco, and Niel Patel.

You may find that this the hardest step for Newbies to take. Like Jonathan said, this is the most important step you will take. Take your time and don’t forget you are always free to change your mind.

HOW TO FIND A NICHE THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

  1. You must watch the Seth Godin video. Seth tells you about niches; You will be ignored if you are not drawing the attention of a specific group. Why? …Get the info directly from Seth, watch the video from this site.
  2. Make a list of your hobbies, interests and areas of expertise. Do you like Family? Fishing? Entertainment? Cooking? Dogs ? Eating ?
  3. Look around you. Find niches of the mainstream markets. My neighbor has a mobile oil changing business. While you are in your office working he is in the parking lot changing your oil. He saves you time and money. He fills a niche in a mainstream market.
  4. Go to the book store. Look at the magazines. If there is a magazine about a subject it could be a good niche. “Wedding Flowers Magazine” has taken the wedding niche down to an even finer niche. Look in a section of the store such as health and beauty, see how many niches there are.
  5. Look on the web.
  • Go to Mashable.com look at their lists. This will give you some great ideas.
  • Do a Google search. Type your idea in parenthesis and see what comes up. “Weddings” “Grocery Shopping” “Dog Costumes” “Photography” Look at the different niches you find under your topic.

Yes Sheila… narrowing down the niche is so important. I have found that out the hard way. If your niche is too broad, it’s harder to market too.
It seems like the smaller the niche, the more folks are willing to put out money to be a part of it. For example, thousands and thousands of dollars are spent on The Lord Of the Rings niche. Who would have known!

I know that in my own life I have things I love and I spend my money on them. Reading is one of my passions….so I spend money on books.
