Twitter-To Follow or Not To Follow?

Do you ask your self who should I follow on Twitter? Part of the twitter game is to gain followers. Apparently is pretty important. Ashton Kutcher just reached a million followers this week. From a marketing stand point a million followers would be fantastic! But I like real quality interaction. Traci Knoppe calls it a common thread.

Traci Knoppe of Genesis Blogging gives her criteria to use for choosing who to follow:

  1. Twitter Bio -I will read the Twitter bio of someone to see if we have any common interests. So it’s important that the bio be completed.
  2. Recent Tweets- I will check to see what they have been tweeting. Are their recent tweets all self-promotion, or are they replying to other people. How much are they interacting with others.
  3. Web Site Link -If they have a web site listed, I’ll go visit that to see what they do or what they have to offer there. Again to see if there’s another area of common interest.

Ever since I read Traci’s blog I have used these three steps and it works really well for me. I takes a few minutes but I find that it is worth it.

Now of course be sure to follow me!

To your Twitter success,

Sheila

P.S. Thanks Traci.

P.S.S. Traci has tons more Twitter data on her blog, be sure and visit. You should also follow her on Twitter.

I don’t use Twitter to promote my site. People who do that annoy me. If they already have a link to their site/ blog in the sidebar at Twitter I can choose to visit or not. I don’t appreciate promotional prompts to visit their site cluttering everything up when I just want to have a conversation.

I try to balance self-promotion with plain everyday chatter. I don’t like those to self-promote all the time. You can get valuable information by clicking on links… so I don’t discount self-promotion… if folks don’t go over-board.

Twitter is touted as a social networking tool. There are different sides to a person and their business just one side. Most of the
followers I get are in Internet Marketing and you would not believe how many only want to sell me something. I screen
those out. I like to learn from Marketers and look at the links they refer…but I also like their personal side- that make
it fun!
