“Creativity is more than just being different. Anybody can plan weird; that’s easy. What’s hard is to be as simple as Bach. Making the simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.” – Charles Mingus
Do you find that there are times when you just can’t put it out there any more? You just can’t write that blog, piece of music or story?
Here are 7 simple ways to stimulate your imagination and to keep creativity flowing.
1. Take a walk. Get away from what you are doing. Get outside and take a walk. Look around you. Get your interest out into your environment. I like walking out in Nature, which is easy to do here in the Mountains of Utah. You may need to hit the local park. Let Nature feed your soul.
2. Make a list. You have lots of talents. Make a list of them. Then create in an area you have not paid attention to for a while. It may be as simple as writing a poem, cooking a meal or singing in the shower.
3. Get inspired. The Internet is full of creative imagination. Go to those web sites that inspire you. Simple Truths is one site I love to visit for inspiration. Or make a search for some really fabulous music.
4. Watch a movie. The creative endeavors of others can get those juices flowing. Choose movies with great cinematography and music; Dr. Zhivago, The Mission, Ryans Daughter.
5. Dance. Put some tunes on and get up and dance. Get that body moving. Go to the local pub and get out on the dance floor. Remember imagination is going outside of the box. So get out of your box and dance. You will be amazed at how well this works.
6. Get sleep. Getting plenty of sleep and eating healthy will keep your attention off of your body. You imagination will be free to roam.
“There is a boundary to men’s passions when they act from feelings; but none when they are under the influence of imagination.” – Edmund Burke
7. Read the precepts. If you have ever felt the desire to be creative and need a jump start, read the “How To Be Creative” manifesto by advertising executive Hugh MacLeod. Download your very own copy for future reference.

Before I start a new project… my mind get’s all befuddled. I use to worry about this… but I soon learned it’s part of my personal creative process. If I just relax…and do something else… the fog clears and new ideas come.
Thanks for the extra tips.

Hi Sheila.
Going on a walk always seems to help, but only when I leave the music behind and focus purely on my surroundings. It gives me a chance to quiet my mind, and the fact that I am not surrounded by the internet, television, or whatever helps. Plus, if I decide to quit walking, then I can’t give into my A.D.D. and just stop, I have to walk home! lol.
Movies are always good too. I can always come up with things to write about, ideas for my fiction, or just be able to relax for a few hours and be recharged by watching a movie.
