How To Backup a WordPress Blog

by sheila on March 19, 2010

How to back up your WordPress Blog was one of the topics covered at the last Utah WordPress Meetup. Thom Allen of DigitalThom.com showed us the basics of backing up your blog.  Because this is such an important step I am adding this data in the middle of my blogging series. And of course it is simple…it is WordPress.

Why do you need to know how to backup WordPress?

  • You may want to change your hosting account. A backup needs to be done before you change.
  • Backup, backup, backup is an absolute rule in the the computer game. You never know!
  • You need to back up your site before doing any major changes.

You simply need to use a WordPress backup plugin. He suggested using either “WP DB Backup” or “WordPress Backup” by Blog Traffic Exchange. Both plugins look easy to install and use. I liked the features of “WordPress Backup” It performs regular backups of your upload (images) current theme, and plugin directories. Backup files are available for download and can be emailed to a specified email. Thom suggests using a separate Gmail account set up just for your back ups.

Now just in case you fail to do this important step, you can always use Thom Allen to get help restoring your blog. It is a new site, but I am telling you these guys know their stuff.

Stop right now and get your backup done.

Sheila

P.S. Don’t get caught without a recent backup of your theme, images or plugins. Especially now that you know how to back up a WordPress blog and which WordPress backup plugin to use.

A couple of years ago, I lost important files by not having them back up properly. I’m sold on having my WordPress files back up.
