How To Blog On WordPress Is Like Learning To Building A House

Understanding and using WordPress themes and plugins are basic for knowing how to blog on WordPress.

You can compare building a WordPress blog to building a house. The basic structure of your house is WordPress it’s self. It is the frame work on a piece of real estate (your domain).

Your WordPress Theme would be the basic structure of your of your home. It is the foundation and frame work you build upon. Your theme is the character and personality of your blog. Your theme adds the color an design. This includes the placement of your side bars, the date and comments. Most important, a good theme makes it easy to change those design elements.

So when it comes to plugins, you are adding the extras to your blog. It is like adding to the plumbing and electrical of your house to really make your home function the way you want. You know, the important decisions like “Do I have a gas or electric furnace?’or “What lighting or electrical outlets go in a room?” or “How many shower heads go in your master shower?” Your plugins give your WordPress blog the extra power to do exactly what your want.

On Newbie Lifeline I have covered why use WordPress and how to choose WordPress themes. Next we will be looking at finding your plugins.

Excellent analogy for those who are new to WordPress. I remember when I started my blog, it was like I was groping in the dark. Good thing I eventually find my way. :-)

  3. True, very true. It’s also like building a house that’s never finished ;) There alway seems to be a new great plugin or application that can make it just a little better/ more interactive/ etc…

Great way to think about WordPress. Thanks Sheila

  4. This is a lovely website chock-full of great info. You’re doing a wonderful job. What do you think is the best plug-in for setting up comments to notify someone by email that I’ve replied to their comment? The ones I’ve chosen don’t seem to be working. Thank you for sharing any wisdom on this.

@Fiona – How true…the good thing WordPress is building more and more of the essential plugins right into the basic format.

@ Walter – Thanks I new I wanted to write this post and the idea came to me in the middle of the night…I must have some kind of creative period at that time.

@Martha – Thank you…that is good news coming from a Newbie Queen.

@Jeanne – I have never used an email plugin. I do know of others that have success with “Comment Notifier” – be sure to note that it does not work with every theme.
