Spam Spam and More Spam – Akismet To The Rescue

by sheila on June 11, 2010

If you have a blog you have comment spam. The really good news it that WordPress is built to cut down on comment spam. Now the Akismet Plugin comes installed on WordPress. You only need to activate it.

1. Simply go to the side panel of your dashboard and click on the plug icon. Go to Installed in the drop down menu. Activate the plugin and go back to the plug icon in your side bar.

2. Choose Akismet Configuration in the drop down menu. Now you will be asked for your API key. Click on Akismet.com to apply for your key. You will need to paste your key code you get by email in the “Is this key valid” box. Update options

Save this key code for any future blogs you set up.

In all the time I have been using this plugin I have not had any spam sneak through to my comments section. I was very diligent in discarding any spam in the spam folder on a weekly basis. Now I hardly get any spam at all.

There is no absolute when it comes to dealing with spam. Spammers are always dreaming up new ways to get their messages through. Akismet is a good way to keep spam at bay.

Do you have any tips on handling spam on your blog?

Sheila

Yes I like to use WP Spam Free in addition to Askimet. It helps catch a lot of the automated things that don’t trigger Askimet.

I certainly enjoy having Akismet on my site. I’m amazed how much span it keeps from coming into my comment area. I appreciate Matt Mullenweg of Automattic for making this a standard feature in WordPress. What a bargain!

Akismet have caught many spammers in my blog. Only a couple have passed through the system. It is a great spam buster tool, however I had wanted double protection and added the Conditional Captcha for wordpress plugin. Will have to try out the WP Spam Free.
