If you were to step back and take a look at all of the Internet Marketing Tools you have under your belt, you would be surprised.
This method of making money online has to do with taking those skills and using them….to bring others online.
If you were to take a few minutes to investigate, you would find that most rural towns do not have website. Plus with further investigation you will find that they would love to have a website. A website makes it easy to post town meetings, local events, news and social announcements.
I live in a small town in the West. Our small town news would include: Birth and death announcements, weddings and anniversaries. Who got the biggest deer in during the deer hunt. Town irrigation announcements. How to pay your water bill. Summer road construction projects. Town meetings. Get the idea?
How does this work?
- Put together a presentation for the town council. Show them the benefits of having a website. Set your price. Be sure to include initial set up and a monthly fee to maintain the site. The site will grow as people get use to having it. So e sure to ask for enough money to make it worth your time and ask for that up front.
- Present the idea to the Town Council. Show them the advantages to having a website. Be ready with costs and benefits.
- Now set the site up on WordPress. This will make the site easy for you to run.
- Rinse and repeat for the next town over.
I have a friend that has made a very comfortable addition to his retirement by setting up and running websites for small towns in Idaho.
So take what your Internet marketing skills and build websites for the small towns in your area.

Great idea! Once you educate offline small business owners about the wonderful benefits of having an online presence, there’s every possibility they’ll become clients for life.
Brick and mortar businesses in your community and surrounding neighborhoods really need the help and expertise that you can offer as an online marketer.

cool idea Sheila. where does the money come from…the town council budget? what kind of fees should we charge?
geez, there are a lot of small towns around here…:-)
Drake near where I live has a post office and a bar/restaurant, and that’s about it.

The money does come from the budget. So you will want to have your proposal ready before the budget meeting.
You can have the blog make the money to help pay for for the service. For example – charge a nominal fee for announcements or local ads. The site could save the town the money they have to spend to put Town Meetings in the newspaper.
What you charge depends on what your area can afford. So a little research needs to be done. When I looked at my town I figured $1000.00 for set up and $100.00 each month to maintain.
Another tip is to have everything come to you by email. Then is mostly a matter of copy and paste.

Hmmm, I like this idea, in theory. But the main thing I don’t like is town councils tend to lack open-mindedness, and a little resistent to change. This could be a bit of an uphill battle…
