What is marketing? Here is a simple way to define marketing.
“Conceiving an idea, packaging the idea and getting it into the public’s hands.”
Let’s take a look at this marketing definition on a small scale.
A farmer decides to grow tomatoes. He loves tomatoes and thinks others will love them too. He picks the tomatoes and puts them in his wagon. He travels to town on Saturdays and sells his tomatoes.
On a grand scale:
Walt Disney has the idea that there should be a place where families can go together and have fun. He connects his concept with his Disney characters. Then brings the concept to life in 1955.
Walt Disney partners with ABC to get the park known to the public. “The Wonderful World Of Disney”, first called “Disneyland” aired weekly on different stations for 35 years.
Successful promotion and partnering with the travel industry has brought millions to the park. Last year alone, 15.9 million people visited the California park.
In this series of blog posts we have been looking at ways you can package ideas and use the Internet to put them into the hands of the public.
Now that we have covered SEO and article marketing. Next up we will look at video marketing. This is not my strong point by any means. So look for a new guest post.

P.S. Remember we started with SEO (search engine optimization) because it plays a major roll in all of your online marketing.

I love your definition of marketing. It’s so simple! I would add in that the conceiving of the idea is best done with a thorough understanding of what your market wants and is looking for. That way, getting it into their hands is much easier.
I agree with Leanne, finding out what is needed and wanted is the first step in deciding what to market. Surveys are an excellent tool for finding out what folks want.
You are both right.
Walt Disney’s idea came when he is visiting he is visiting the very first theme park “Fairyland”. He was able to observe what was needed and wanted.
But some of the best ideas come from what we like…what we need and want. (The farmer example.) Out of this has come fabulous software and products like the baby sling.
Way to sum up what it took me 4 years to get a degree in…. and you did it without giving a stats lesson. =)

LOL – My last post was on stats.
I really like taking things right down to the basic definition and then work from that point.
Looks like you’re doing another fabulous blog series, Sheila. I’ll have to travel back in time a bit and catch the SEO info.
Great explanation of Marketing! I always think of marketing as the opposite of advertising.
To me, the essence of marketing is creating an online presence which helps to build your brand and establish good relationships with your target audience. Of course, you know me. I could write volumes about what I just said!
Marketing is simply getting yourself and your business out there in ways that are not interruptive, pushy, or sales-y. Marketing is non-threatening.
Love your posts!
